35. Who am I, What is my Identity
Written by: Ian & Karen
The question “Who am I?” is one that we all ask ourselves from time-to-time, and the answers can be many – depending on who we listen to. If we listen to the world – then who we are, is determined by what we own, what we work at, how much education we have; how much people look up to us, where we are from, and what color our skin is. All this is foolishness – or “meaningless” – as King Solomon would say.
If who am I is based on what we own, then we’re in for a sad surprise, because we will one day learn – We own nothing! What we hold onto won’t follow us into our grave, and even if it could – gold is just a metal, property is just dirt and brick, and a diamond is just a lump of coal.
If it’s our job which defines our identity, then we’re also in for a surprise; because the month after we retire – everyone has forgotten about us. (Maybe sooner.) If we think we are Mr. or Miss. or Mrs. “big” in our organization – We aren’t. Our company will do just fine the day after we leave.
If education defines us, then that too will let us down; because the world moves on, and what we know today, will soon be just ancient history. With all the thousands of universities and research facilities we have – starvation, war, and loneliness are getting worse. In fact, with all our learning – we can’t even figure out why one person’s eyes are a different color that another’s.
If how the world sees us or how we want people to remember us is our identity, then let me ask you this: Who invented the Jet engine, train, subway, radio; or who invented the seatbelt, calculator or dental floss? My point is that these people were looked up to at the time; however, history has forgotten them.
Where we are from is a silly way to define ourselves, because we are all from God. However, if we insist on defining ourselves this way, then let us as least be honest with ourselves: every nation is equally bad. If we sit down and really think about and study our nation, we will probably be (should be) saddened by the reality. We’re all equally bad; therefore, where we are from should not be used to define us. To me, when I see person show off about where they are from – I see a person who doesn’t know anything about where he is from.
If the color of our skin defines who we are, then we are among the saddest of all people.
What is common among the above mentioned – is pride. This comes from the devil. He tries to get us to define our identity by these things, and if that doesn’t work, he tells us we have no worth, and are unloved by God. Nonsense! God does love us; this is our identity; this is who we are. The answer to the question “Who am I?” is: I am somebody, because God created and loves me. How do we know this?
In the Bible, in the book of Genesis 1:26-27, God said:” let us [God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit] make man [humans] in our image [like us], in our likeness, and let them rule over … all the earth.” Our identity is that God created us in His image, and gave us power over everything else. When the Devil tries to confuse us and make us feel like we have no worth; we must remember that God created us in His image, which gives us dignity.
The most inspiring and beautiful way that God showed His love for us was by sending His precious Son to die for us. Whenever we feel sad and doubt our worth, we must remember what John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that whosoever believes in Him shall never perish but have everlasting life.” Our worth and identity are found in the fact that God loved us so much – that He actually sent His beloved Son down here to die for us. Our identity is that God loves us.
Our identity is also contained in John 15:16 where Jesus says: “You did not choose me, but I chose you ….” In the whole world – with all of its billions of people – Jesus chose you and me, which is amazing because He didn’t have to choose us – He wanted to. He decided to love, protect, guide and bless us. This is not only an honor, but also our identity. When we ask, “Who am I?” the answer is – I am someone who Jesus chose to love. It’s that simple.
V Proof of our identity can also be found all over the Old Testament, particularly in Psalms 8:3 where is says: “When I think about Your [God’s] heavens [the sky and space], they are the work of Your fingers, and the moon and stars, which you have created, What are we humans that you think about us, the son of man [humans] that you care about him?” The writer of this passage is astounded by the fact that with all of the marvelous and beautiful things God has created, that He remembers and cares about us. Our identity is that God remembers and cares about us.
Psalms 139:1-3 states: “O Lord, You have searched me, and you know me …. You know my thoughts from far away …. You know when I go out and when I lie down …. You know everything about me …. Before I even say a word, you know it, O Lord.” How amazing this is: God takes an interest in everything we do! What an honor to us. Our identity is that we are important to God – even thought He certainly doesn’t need us. He simply wants to love and show interest in us.
Psalms 139:13-16 states wonderfully: “You [God] created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” The writer states his joy at the knowledge that God created Him, and the same applies for us. We are God’s creations, and God doesn’t build foolishness; therefore, our identity is the happiness at knowing we are creations of perfect God.
Ephesians 2:4-5 states: “Because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins.” Our identity is that God loves us without ceasing, and all this, is despite our wickedness.
This article cannot possibly cover this subject in detail, but there is a basic point: Our identity is that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit love us dearly. In the Bible, God is our creator, Father, judge, helper, protector, avenger, guide, wisdom giver, and everything else; and Jesus is our friend and our savior.
The title of the article is “Who am I?” and the answer is simple: we are God’s creations; the objects of His perfect love. Please, get on your knees and ask Jesus into your heart, and then – you’ll find who you are.
