Bible Passages
21. Do not worry. Mathew 6:25
Jesus told us not to worry about our life or what we wear, drink, or about our body because He said our life is more important than clothes (and other things). Jesus said to look at the birds of the air; they don’t grow food or store it away, and yet God feeds them. He told us we are more valuable to God than birds and that we could not add a single hour to our lives by worrying.
Jesus then told us not to be concerned about what we wear because the lilies [flowers] that grow in the field don’t’ grow their own clothes, and yet not even King Solomon had clothes as beautiful as the flower’s. Jesus says that if God takes care of the flower, that is here today and burned tomorrow, then He will take care of us as well.
Jesus says it is because we have little faith that we worry. He tells us not to run around and worry about worldly things, but to focus on heaven. He says the unbelievers waste their time worrying, but this is not for a Christian to do because Jesus says God knows what we need, so we should not worry. He said, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” By this Jesus means to not worry about the future.
In this passage we are told about how we are loved and protected by God. The point is that if God doesn’t forget about the small flowers and the grass, then He won’t forget about us either.
A reference is made to the clothes of King Solomon as an example of the finest and most beautiful things that humans can make, but in contrast to this is the simple and perfect beauty of what God creates, the flower. The things we create are to glorify ourselves and increase our arrogance, while God’s beauty is in simple natural things that are not made beautiful just to impress someone else, but are simply beautiful because it pleased God to make them beautiful.
We must not worry about the things of this life because one day this life will pass away; only God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God’s word and Christians will last forever in heaven, and nonbelievers in hell. The problems of today and the future will not last forever, but salvation will.
