40. Marriage in heaven. Mathew 22:23-33
One day, a group of Sadducees gathered. A part of the Sadducee’s belief was that they didn’t believe in resurrection. Resurrection is where Christians rise from death and go to heaven. The Sadducees approached Jesus to try and trap Him into giving a bad answer in order to hurt Him; they said, “Teacher [totally sarcastic,] if a man dies without any children then his brother must marry the woman and raise the children on behalf of his brother.”
Upon making this statement the Sadducees told an imaginary story: “A man died without any children, so his brother married the widow. The second man also died, as did his five brothers. Altogether, seven men (all brothers) had been married to the woman, but no children resulted.” The Sadducees asked Jesus: Whose wife would she be at the time of resurrection?
Jesus responded that at the time of resurrection there would not be any marriage.
He then told them about how wrong they were about the resurrection. Jesus said that God declared, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Jesus then said, “He [God] is not the God of the dead but of the living.” The intent of this statement was to show that the three men mentioned were still alive in heaven because God says He is the God of these men and not that He was the God of them. This means there is a resurrection, which means there is life after death. God says He is the God of the living and not of the dead. God is the living God who lives forever, as do all His creations.
