Bible Passages
52. Jesus is buried. Mathew 27:57-61, Mark 15:42
The day of Jesus’ crucifixion was called the “Preparation Day,” which meant it was the day before the Sabbath (the Jewish holy day). As the evening arrived, there was a man named Joseph from Arimahea who was a rich and important member of the council. The Bible says Joseph was a good person who was against having Jesus crucified. Joseph went courageously to Governor Pilate and asked if He could take Jesus’ body to bury it, which surprised Pilate to hear that Jesus had died so soon, but when he learned from one of the soldiers that this was true, he told Joseph he could have the body.
Joseph took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in clean linen and then placed it in his (Joseph’s) tomb. Since Joseph was rich, this tomb was the tomb made for rich person. The tomb was cut in the rock, and once Jesus was placed inside, Joseph rolled a large rock in front to the entrance to protect Jesus’ body. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph sat next to the tomb.
The women went back to their homes and made ready some spices and perfume which they would cover Jesus’ body with after the Sabbath. The Sabbath day, which was the day of rest, was the next day, and on this day nobody was allowed to do any work. This was one of the Ten Commandments.
