Bible Passages
8. Jesus’ baptism
At about the same time, Jesus lived in the region of left the region of Galilee, where one day He went to the Jordan River where John was baptizing people. Jesus wanted to be baptized by John, but John didn’t want this to happen because he thought it better to have Jesus baptize him. Jesus was patient with John because He knew that it would be natural for John to want Jesus to baptize him; after-all, Jesus was the Son of God; however, Jesus said, “Let it be so for now; it is proper for us to do this ….”
Jesus stepped into the river and allowed John to baptize him. His body went entirely under the water, and when he came out of the water, he saw the Spirit of God coming down out of the sky in the form of a dove, where it then landed on Him. From there He then heard God’s voice say, “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” God told the world He loved Jesus, and was pleased
In this passage we see John obeying God by living in the desert and baptizing people, and we see repentant people wanting to be baptized, but most importantly – we see Jesus wanting to be baptized. That’s how important baptism is.
