7. OSTEOPOROSIS (Thinning of the bones)

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the person’s bones become brittle and crack easily – especially in the hip, spine, and wrist. It is something that a person must speak to their doctor about early, in order to get the proper treatment.
Possible symptoms of Osteoporosis
Sharp pain that suddenly comes on in the back – especially in the mid and lower back.
Pain that comes- in the back, ribs, hip or wrist after a fall.
• Joint pain
• Muscle pain
• Sometimes there are no symptoms
Symptoms that may occur late in the disease
• Loss of height
• Leg cramps at night
• Bone pain and tenderness
• Neck pain
• Pain in the spine and lower back
• Stomach pains
• Tooth loss
• Rib pain
• Broken bones
• Stooped posture and curve of spine
• Tiredness
• Easily breakable fingernails
Possible causes of osteoporosis?
Lack of exercise
Natural occurrence in some families
Changes in certain hormones (chemicals), particularly estrogen
Not eating enough foods rich in calcium, vitamin C, phosphorous and magnesium
Not enough vitamin D (from not enough sunlight)

• Smoking
• Caffeine
• Coffee
• Tea
• Colas
• An over-active thyroid
• Diabetes
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Anorexia
• Bulimia
• Kidney failure
• Cancer
• Paget’s disease
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• High fat foods
• Sugar
• Too much calcium
• Too much bed rest
• Cushing disease
• Eating too much protein
Certain medicines that stop the body from absorbing calcium; for example, cortisol/costicostretoids, anticoagulants, thyroid supplements, and anti-convulsive drugs.
