Saving China, one person at a time A little over five years ago, a friend and I started meeting up a couple of times a week in a local fast food restaurant, and since we had become “regulars,” we also noticed other regulars, who from time to time would join us. Almost all of them were new Chinese immigrants who sat in the place and did their English language or career homework; however, many of them looked sad and confused. We prayed and asked God for His guidance and slowly but surely, we started a mission where we did resumes, helped with school and job problems, but mostly just gave friendship. Our new friends were from the other side of the world and more than 10,000 miles away from those they loved, in a different culture, with a different language – It was too much pressure and stress for them. Enter Jesus. He told us to care for those who were sick, lonely and unwanted, so that‘s what we did. It’s was so typical of God to work in ways too mysterious for us to understand but here it was: two Christians, offering Jesus’ love to newcomers in a noisy, crowded, bright and plastiky fast food joint! At first we had two or three, but slowly the word spread that there were a couple of native Canadians who were good people and wanted to help. As the months went on we got a regular group going, with the occasional arrival of a “Popo” (grandmother in Chinese), bringing her grandkids to get free help with school. The Popos would sometimes sit about six inches from my mouth and mimic what I said as a way to learn English, and better: would sometimes bring delicious homemade Chinese food. About a year into it, things got steadily more serious as we dealt with abandonment of women by their husbands, and to date, we’ve helped ten women in this situation. We can’t solve the human problem, but through God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, we solve the spiritual problems. We tell them that they are not alone and that Jesus loves and will never desert them. Over the years we’ve done more than 300 hundred resumes, because unemployment is a big problem for the new immigrant, which can lead to lack of confidence and family and socialization problems. It isn’t all serious however, as last Christmas we threw a Christmas dinner for the newcomers where two-hundred-plus people came, had a great and free meal, saw some Chinese cultural dancing, forgot their problems for an evening and went home with the phone number of a new made friend. The kids also got a toy each and an evening of running around and having fun, while the parents got to catch up on what was happening back home in China. This summer, we have bought two gigantic inflatable rafts which we take to a local lake each Sunday afternoon to let the folks have fun while they learn about God in His natural world. We’ve also started a website (www.tjlit.org) where we have translated the New Testament into easy to understand English and have now had 100,000+ hits. We did this because the newcomers are hungry to learn about Jesus, but the New Testament is too hard for many. The site also has a Christian book that one of our members has written, and is offered free to everyone. Our site is now in English and Chinese thanks to the dedication of our six volunteer translators, and will soon be in Spanish, Korean, Japanese and Talgalog. Thank you Jesus. Over the years we’ve had, and continue to have, a considerable amount of hatred thrown our way, but that just tells us we’re on the right track; moreover, we’ve gone from getting kicked out of eight places, to being greeted wherever we go because of three nice articles written about us in a Chinese newspaper.
Thousands are coming to Jesus each day in China, which makes them our brothers and sisters in Christ. When I see a cute little kid talk about Jesus or a grandmother or a high school student – I can’t describe how good it feels. One of them said to me, “I had to leave my family and job in China and come all the way to Canada to get Jesus – how blessed I am!” Please pray that God will continue to bless our work. May God bless us all |
