Passage on Faith
Faith for Positive Change 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 (NIV)
Stand Firm
"But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers
loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through
the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called
you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord
Jesus Christ. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed
on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by
his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts
and strengthen you in every good deed and word."

Open-Handed Faith Galatians 3:1-14 (NIV)
Faith or Observance of the Law
"You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before
your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to
learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law,
or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the
Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you
suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? Does God give
you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or
because you believe what you heard?
Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness." Understand, then, that those who believe are children of
Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be
blessed through you." So those who have faith are blessed along with
Abraham, the man of faith.
All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written:
"Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the
Book of the Law." Clearly no one is justified before God by the law,
because, "The righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on
faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by
them." Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse
for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a
tree."He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to
Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we
might receive the promise of the Spirit."

Acts 16:16-40 (NIV)
Paul and Silas in Prison
"Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we
were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future.
She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. This girl
followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the
Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." She kept this up
for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said
to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of
her!" At that moment the spirit left her.
When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money
was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to
face the authorities. They brought them before the magistrates and said,
"These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by
advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates
ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After they had been severely flogged,
they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them
carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and
fastened their feet in the stocks.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the
other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent
earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the
prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. The jailer woke up,
and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill
himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted,
"Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and
Silas. He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I
do to be saved?"
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be
saved—you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord
to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer
took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were
baptized. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he
was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his
whole family.
When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with
the order: "Release those men." The jailer told Paul, "The
magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go
in peace."
But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial,
even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they
want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us
out."
The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul
and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. They came to appease them and
escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city. After Paul
and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met
with the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left."

Trusting in the Unseen John 20:24-31(NIV)
Jesus Appears to Thomas
"Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was
not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him,
"We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the
nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand
into his side, I will not believe it."
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with
them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said,
"Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger
here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting
and believe."
Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed
are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples,
which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that
you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing
you may have life in his name."
Passage on Faith
Matthew 13:24-52 (NIV)
The Parable of the Weeds
Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven
is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was
sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When
the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. "The
owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your
field? Where then did the weeds come from?' " 'An enemy did this,'
he replied. "The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them
up?' " 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you
may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At
that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in
bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.' "
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast
He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is
like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is
the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden
plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its
branches."
He told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like
yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until
it worked all through the dough."
Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything
to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the
prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden
since the creation of the world."
The Parable of the Weeds Explained
Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His
disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in
the field."
He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The
field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The
weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.
The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
"As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at
the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed
out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will
throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a
field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold
all he had and bought that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a
merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went
away and sold everything he had and bought it.
The Parable of the Net
"Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that
was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the
fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good
fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of
the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and
throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.
"Have you understood all these things?" Jesus
asked. "Yes," they replied.
He said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been
instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings
out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."

Job 19:23-27 (NIV)
"Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll,
that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock
forever! I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand
upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will
see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How
my heart yearns within me!

Esther 4:12-16 (NIV)
When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer:
"Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all
the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your
father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal
position for such a time as this?"
Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: "Go, gather together all
the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days,
night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go
to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I
perish."

2 Chronicles 7:13-16 (NIV)
"When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command
locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who
are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and
turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive
their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears
attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and
consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my
heart will always be there.

2 King 6:8-23 (NIV)
Elisha Traps Blinded Arameans
Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After
conferring with his officers, he said, "I will set up my camp in such and
such a place." The man of God sent word to the king of Israel:
"Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there."
So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time
and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.
This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, "Will
you not tell me which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?"
"None of us, my lord the king," said one of his officers, "but
Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words
you speak in your bedroom." "Go, find out where he is,"
the king ordered, "so I can send men and capture him." The report
came back: "He is in Dothan." Then he sent horses and chariots
and a strong force there.
They went by night and surrounded the city. When the servant
of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with
horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we
do?" the servant asked. "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered.
"Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the
LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses
and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the
LORD, "Strike these people with blindness." So he struck them with
blindness, as Elisha had asked. Elisha told them, "This is not the road
and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are
looking for." And he led them to Samaria. After they entered the
city, Elisha said, "LORD, open the eyes of these men so they can
see." Then the LORD opened their eyes and they looked, and there they
were, inside Samaria. When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha,
"Shall I kill them, my father? Shall I kill them?" "Do not
kill them," he answered. "Would you kill men you have captured with
your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and
drink and then go back to their master." So he prepared a great feast for
them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and
they returned to their master. So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel's
territory.
