Passage on Joy
God's Comfort 1 Peter 4:12-19 (NIV)
Suffering for Being a Christian
"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful
trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But
rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be
overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of
Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If
you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of
criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not
be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. For it is time for judgment
to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the
outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, "If it
is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the
sinner?" So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit
themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good."

2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (NIV)
Sowing Generously
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man
should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace
abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,
you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "He has
scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures
forever." Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will
also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of
your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be
generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in
thanksgiving to God.
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's
people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of
the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the
obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for
your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their
prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing
grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!"

Beyond Boredom Proverbs 8:22-31 (NIV)
"The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds
of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world
began. When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs
abounding with water; before the mountains were settled in place, before the
hills, I was given birth, before he made the earth or its fields or any of the
dust of the world. I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he
established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, when
he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and
when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was the craftsman at
his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his
presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind."

The Art of the Heart Job 16:1-5 (NIV)
Then Job replied: "I have heard many things like these;
miserable comforters are you all! Will your long-winded speeches never end?
What ails you that you keep on arguing? I also could speak like you, if you
were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at
you. But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring
you relief.

A childlike Heart Nehemiah 8:9-12 (NIV)
"Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the
Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is
sacred to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep." For all the people had
been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. Nehemiah said,
"Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who
have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the
joy of the LORD is your strength." The Levites calmed all the people,
saying, "Be still, for this is a sacred day. Do not grieve." Then all
the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to
celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been
made known to them."
